Well what a difference a month makes! After going through one of the worst starts to a season “weather wise” that one can recall. It was a great feeling driving across to Nambour to take part in their Junior Open, under beautiful blue skies and on a day that was just perfect for golf. It was also great to see Nambour back to its former glory with the sun shining and everyone out on course enjoying their golf.

Even though the numbers were down a little on last year’s Open “due to clashes with other events”, Mal Wilson and Mark Shaw (Nambour Professionals) were thrilled with the way their Junior Open was run and look forward to hosting it again next year!

The Tour would like to congratulate Luke Parker (Peregian Springs) on his excellent performance in winning the 2011 Nambour Junior Open by five shots over Chris Crabtree (Caloundra) with scores of 67gross / 65 nett. Amy Walsh took out the girls division with a solid 82/77.

Congratulations to Chris Jimenez (Pacific) and Damon Derrick (Nambour) for the way they contested the play – off in B Grade. It was a great sight to see the large gallery following both Chris and Damon down the first as they played some brilliant golf and fought hard to see who was going to win the Boys B Grade Title. After both boys pared holes one and eight in extra time, it came down to the ninth hole in fading light where Jimenez held his nerve and holed a meter plus putt for victory. (Pictured below centre)

Thanks to Mal Wilson, Mark Shaw and their team in Joan Grace, Des Meikle. Abby Crook and David Weisenberger (below) for all the hard work and effort they put into hosting their event. These events don’t just happen by accident; they happen because people care enough about our juniors to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to make sure they get every opportunity to enjoy their golf. With that comes a certain responsibility to our juniors and their parents to get behind your local clubs and support “Tour Events” because at the end of the day it’s in your own best interest!

I believe it’s only a matter of time, if everyone works together and I think that time is fast approaching when all clubs will have a strong healthy junior base and The Tour will become a strong form of competition and a healthy breeding ground for junior golfers on the Sunshine Coast.

Mark Shaw has asked me to pass on his and Nambour’s thanks and appreciation to The Sunshine Coast & Regional District RSL Inc, Leak Tech, All Cast – Pre Cast, Coca Cola, Mars and On Course Golf for their sponsorship and support.

The Tour would like to thank Mal Wilson for the loan of a cart to help marshal the field and take photos for the website!

We would like to thank everyone for the way you are trying to do all the little things that are required to keep the pace of play running smoothly, “it really is appreciated” and helps everyone have a great day out!

If you haven’t visited Nambour of late or had a game on their challenging course, then now’s the time to do so because their course is looking an absolute picture. To find out more go to www.nambourgolfclub.com.au

I spoke to Mal Wilson (Head Professional) after presentations and he was very keen on supporting junior golf. Mal was also very excited with the direction junior golf was taking throughout the Sunshine Coast and is very committed to doing everything in his power to maintain that positive direction.

As most people are aware, it’s been a goal and driving force behind The Invincibles Tour to have 100 plus competitors competing at every Junior Classic or Open throughout the Sunshine Coast and I am thrilled to say, that this is starting to happen, even though the numbers were down a little on last year’s Nambour Junior Open, generally speaking, The Tour is growing and the competition is starting to become very competitive which can only be a good thing for everyone, not the least our juniors and their Development Program.

It’s just unbelievable to see the large galleries that are following these events and to witness the fantastic groups that stay back to support others at presentation. It really is appreciated and it sends out a very strong message that you are prepared to support others on their special day.

The Tour would like to thank the caterers and bar staff for the great job they did in looking after everyone.

A special thanks the course superintendant and his team for doing a massive job preparing the course, particularly given the rain we’ve had over the past eight months, well done boys, you really did a great job and we certainly appreciated it!!!

On a personal note: I would like to thank Frank Schmidt, Perry Preston and Keith Stockill for the fantastic job they do in keeping our stats, finances and records up to date. A big thanks to Neil Charkow (website1000) for keeping our website up to date with what’s happening on Tour.

Nambour took out the four points in The Invincibles Inter – Club Team Shield with 199 nett, Horton Park earned two points with 203 nett and Peregian Springs earned one point for coming third with 208 nett.
