Well; where does one start when they set about doing a “News Letter” on the very popular and much sort after Bargara Junior Classic???
I suppose a good place to start is by acknowledging the joy and benefits that the Bargara Junior Classic brings to everyone. You only have to witness the excitement and anticipation that builds in those that have been there before to realize just how important this event is to junior golf, to witness the joy and pleasure they get out of telling stories of years gone by “most of them lies, mistruths and massive exaggerations” but there not about to let a little fiction or a touch of truth get in the way of a good story!
The Bargara Junior Classic was started back in 1989 by the Hobbs family, Helen and Frank Hobbs (pictured below centre) with reasonable fields taking part at the time, to now where it’s become one of best organised and most sort after Junior Tournaments in Queensland, where it’s not uncommon to have fields of up to 240 entries where Val has the heart ache of having to turn people away!
I don’t know and I’m not quite sure if Mr and Mrs Hobbs or the Hobbs family quite realised what they were starting when they created the Bargara Junior Classic “but thank heavens they persevered with their dream” because they, along with Val and her team at Bargara have created a fantastic legacy, a legacy that’s brought an enormous amount of joy and satisfaction into the lives of so many juniors and their families throughout South East Queensland and beyond.
Val Bazley: What can we say “You’re an inspiration and jewel to the game” your efforts don’t go unnoticed and we applaud the massive contribution and passion you bring to the game “particularly at a junior golf level” and The Tour, their juniors and families would like you to know that they really appreciate yours and your teams efforts!!!
Thanks a million Val, you make the world of difference to an enormous amount of kids, their families and golf in general!!!
The Bargara Golf Club and their Junior Classic has witnessed some very talented young golfers taking part in their event, which include such players as Scott Gardiner, Jason Day, Richard Moir, Gavin Flint, Katherine Hull, Daniel Nisbet, Cameron Smith and Ellen Chambers, to now where Viraat Badwhar (Indooroopilly) and Lauren Mason (Horton Park) pictured below, can add their names to the list.
There’s one thing that I’m absolutely sure of, and that is that Val Bazley and her team at Bargara have left no stone unturned to create one of the best, “if not the best” junior golfing event that I’ve been to. The fun, joy and sheer pleasure the kids derive from the carnival type atmosphere, is infectious, both on and off the course which is absolutely brilliant and a thrill for everyone!!!
To say the weather during our week of Bargara’s Junior Classic “was just perfect” would be a gross understatement, and I know from the feedback, that everyone took full advantage of the conditions by having an absolute ball whilst enjoying their golf and each other’s company.
The feedback that I’ve received is that our golfing guru’s, their parents and families had a brilliant time, so much so that they can’t wait to get back next year, as a matter of fact, some have already booked to avoid disappointment. “Always a smart move”
Congratulations to all successful contestants, in particular, Viraat Badhwar (Indooroopilly) 73-70-68=211 and Lauren Mason (Horton Park) 76-74- 75=225 (pictured above) who won both the Bargara Junior Classic and the Queensland Boys and Girls Amateur Championship Titles which was held over due the floods in January.
Val has asked me to thank Graham and Margaret and pass on their deepest thanks and appreciation to J & R McCracken, Irrigation Specialists (Graham pictured above centre with Val) for their fantastic support and sponsorship of this Tournament over many years.
Many thanks also must go to Trevor Leutton from Radio 4BU for their support and coverage of the event!!!
The Tour would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the enormous team involved for bringing the Bargara Junior Classic together, and they are, Director: Val Bazley, together with Phil Curd, Tom Crothers and Barry Shepherd (Golf Queensland), John Archibald, Ian Smallwood, Don McKewan, Ben De Graef (manager), Margarat Zande, Jenny Turner, Alison Curd, Alan Jones, Jim McLaughlan (Board Director) and Doug Gardiner. We would like to thank the office and bar staff, the caterers and to anyone that played any small part in bringing the Bargara Junior Classic together. It was a brilliant effort and I’m more than sure I speak for everyone when I say “job well done” we had a ball and look forward to repeating it all again next year!!!

I must say, and I believe most would agree, the joint venture between Bargara and Golf Queensland worked an absolute treat and just reinforces to me and most golfing officials what we already know and that is, that if everyone works together for a common cause and shares resources (like Bargara) then it would benefit golf clubs and golf in general.
At the very least it would indicate a unified team, leadership and a desire to bring all levels of golf into line under the Golf Queensland banner!!!
It was brilliant to have Barry Shepherd and Tom Crothers (Golf Queensland Dignitaries) pictured above, officiating over this joint venture which brought an air of prestige to what is already a brilliant Tournament.
On a personal note, I’d like to take the time to thank both Tom and Barry for taking the time to talk with me on all matters related to golf, for sharing their experiences, offering guidance and for giving their views on where they believe The Invincibles Tour fits into the main stream of golf in Queensland. Our discussions were both honest, fruitful and from the heart. Given what I heard from both Tom and Barry, it gave me a greater insight into working relationship between Golf Queensland, PGA of Australia, The Greg Norman Junior Golf Foundation and junior golf in general, which to me was a good thing and gave me direction.
Congratulations to the Course Superintendant (Linc Urquhart) from everyone on tour, the course was in magnificent condition “probably the best I’ve seen it” that along with the perfect weather we experienced during the week made it an absolute pleasure and joy to be out on course witnessing some fantastic golf and some very talented young golfers!!
Many thanks to Phil Curd and his team for the loan of a cart during the tournament and for his kind words and feedback at presentation, it was very much appreciated.
To the kids; “what a great bunch” It gives Frank and I a great deal of pleasure to witness the talent that’s on Tour, to witness some of the most incredible golfing achievements on a regular basis is just exhilarating and it’s a pleasure to be associated with.
A couple of things I really do enjoy seeing, is the camaraderie that’s building between players on Tour and the way junior golfers are dressing these days, they bring much needed colour and flare to the game which is always a good thing and long overdue given it’s a part of the game I’ve personally found lacking.
If we could only work together to refine the finer points of the game such as “honesty, attitude and pace of play, our Tour would be the richest and most enjoyable Junior Golfing Tour in the Country “and wouldn’t that be something worth competing in” Because what I see out on course at the moment with the vast majority of our juniors is world class and it’s something you should be enormously proud of.
I do appreciate those that have come to me with their concerns in regards to the above and I can assure you that your concerns have been heard and are being acted on!!
I would like to thank Michael at C Bargara Resort (Grand Mercury Apartments) for their friendly hospitality and for looking after us over the four days. Their resort is absolutely beautiful and we more than enjoyed our stay. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay next year or just planning to take a break, then I can totally recommend C Bargara, give them a call, I’m more than sure you will enjoy the experience.
