After what had been a disastrous start to 2011, The Invincibles Tour with the support of Gympie Golf Club, their junior co-ordinator Brad Richards, Drummond Golf, Srixon Australia, Mountain Creek Meats and Mountain Creek Café Bakery we decided to hold our own Junior Classic in an effort to get our juniors back on TOUR, and just as importantly, back on course enjoying their golf as well as each other’s company!
The forty five odd competitors “twenty two of those under ten in handicap”, their families and friends have asked me to pass on their thanks and appreciation to Jon & Mike Towler (Owners) for allowing us the use of their course and to their great team behind the bar which included Col Smith, Jacqui Cook and Glenn Tierney. Given everything that has happened over the past eight weeks, we couldn’t have asked for more and we would like to thank everyone involved for the fabulous support and encouragement they gave to The Tour and most importantly to our juniors, their families and The Invincibles Development Program.
One has to applaud Gympie Golf Club and their ground staff “which comprises of a course superintendant and volunteers” who worked tirelessly to get their course back in shape and up and running after taking an unbelievable bashing and it’s a absolute credit to everyone involved for the way they picked themselves up and came out fighting, well done gang on a fantastic effort!!!
I must say that when Frank and I were driving up the Bruce Highway, we didn’t know quite what to expect. We knew that Gympie had been hit hard and were in recovery mode, but I must say, after taking everything into consideration we had a ball and witnessed some brilliant golf from some of South East Queensland’s finest young golfers, including a 59 nett from a young Gympie boy, Ian McPherson not to mention a four way c/b (65 nett) to see who was going to qualify for The Invincibles / Hyatt Regency Coolum Gold Cup of Cups Championship!! All in all we had a great time.
I must say, it’s enormously refreshing to me and a fantastic sight to see so many of our members prepared to rallying around and offer their support and services to make sure The Tour functions at the highest possible level, to make sure we give The Tour every opportunity to succeed and end up with best possible outcome.
I believe this is one of the greatest assets and strengths of The Invincibles Tour and I would like to thank those members that are prepared to put in and the Gympie Golf Club for doing everything in their power to make sure we had a Junior Classic to compete at and for having the course in such excellent condition given the circumstances. If you would like to enjoy a round of golf at Gympie or find more information on the Gympie Golf Club visit www.gympiepines.com.au
I would also like to send a special thanks Frank Schmidt for the fantastic job he does with the kids and for all the things he does to make sure The Tour Functions effectively. I would like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to Natalie Preston and Brett Park for helping with scoring and finalizing the results. To Christine Samen – Curtis for helping me with the photography, Aneka Park for her fantastic support at presentation, Neil Charkow for the unbelievable job he does with The Invincibles website and to Keith Stockill for the great job he does with the stats and last but not least, the parents, for their support and patience because without that The Tour wouldn’t function!
I’d like to make a special mention of a young man in Christian Butterworth (Peregian Springs), for not only his sportsmanship, but also for his generosity. Young Christian won three awards on Sunday and wanted to share them with the members of his group to thank them for a great day out. That makes me feel absolutely fantastic and I’m sure it makes his family feel enormously proud as well. Well done Christian, you optimize what The Invincibles Tour is all about and it makes everyone associated with The Tour proud to be involved!!!!
