Sunday, January 22 2012 saw The Invincibles Tour, thanks to the generosity of Maurice Holland (General Manager) and Hyatt Regency Coolum who generously hosted our fifth Annual Matchplay Championships to the delight of six of the South East Queensland’s very talented young golfers, their caddies and galleries! It was a day where we were incredibly lucky with the weather given that storms were brewing all over the Sunshine Coast “except at the Hyatt” where the conditions were just perfect for our juniors to take up the challenge to see who was going to be the Invincibles Matchplay Champions for 2012!!!

As always, it was an absolute thrill and privilege to be able to contest the finals of one of our most prestigious events at the home of the Australian PGA Championship “The Hyatt Regency Coolum” and The Invincibles Tour would like to pass on their thanks and appreciation to Maurice Holland (General Manager), Paul Crangle (Golf Director) and their staff for their very generous support and for generously allowing us the use of their majestic course which was in excellent condition and an enormous thrill and highlight for everyone involved!

As everyone’s aware, The Hyatt’s absolutely blessed from start to finish with magnificent golf holes. The first hole would have to be one of my all time favorites. To me it’s a true test of golf, a par five that’s got just about every challenge you can think of and then some. I believe it’s a hole that you have to respect and it’s fair to say that if you don't come with your A game right from the start then you could be in for a long day!

The six qualifiers that earned the right to contest The Invincibles 2012 Matchplay Final after knockout rounds at Mount Coolum and Horton Park were from left to right above, Tiana Beakey (Surfers Paradise) and Aneka Park (Caloundra). Kodie Koski (Caloundra) and Shae Wools – Cobb (Horton Park), Trent Easton (Bribie Island) and Joshua Horswill (Keperra). As the photographs would indicate, these six very talented golfers came to play and play they did with some outstanding results!

Even though the skies were overcast and threatening early, the day turned out to be absolutely perfect for golf. In fact I don’t believe it could have had better conditions. I’m sure all contestants took full advantage given the incredible weather that we have experienced over the preceding week. I’m also sure everyone was absolutely delighted to be out on course (particularly at the Hyatt Coolum) contesting such a prestigious event as The Invincibles Matchplay Championships!

2012 INVINCIBLES MATCHPLAY RUNNERS - UP

Shae Wools - Cobb (Horton) Tiana Beakey (Surfers) Trent Easton (Bribie)

The A Grade Boys match was an excellent pairing, with Shae Wools – Cobb (Horton Park) and Kodie Koski (Caloundra) going head to head and playing some excellent golf as you would expect. The result seesawed whilst both boys did everything in their power to take control, but it was never going to be easy as neither boy wanted to give an inch. Shae’s brilliant birdie on three after hitting the pin “for eagle” with his chip shot and his unbelievable bunker shot on thirteen from one hundred and fifty metres out wasn’t going to be enough to counter Kodie’s brilliant chip in on fourteen and his unbelievable hundred and fifty metre bunker shot on sixteen to secure victory and finish the match 3/2.

The Girls Open Division saw Aneka Park (Caloundra) and Tiana Beakey (Surfers Paradise) play some excellent golf. After being runner – up to close friend Mikaleigh Pickles last year, Aneka wasn’t about to let that valuable experience go to waste as she set about playing some brilliant golf which included her drives on one and five, her approach to four and her tee shot and birdie putt on eleven! Tiana played some brilliant golf of her own with excellent approach shots on nine and thirteen and for someone that has only been playing for a short time put in an excellent effort to get to the Finals which Aneka won 4/3.

The B-C Grade Boys Division saw two very talented young golfers go head to head in Trent Easton (Bribie Island) and Joshua Horswill (Keperra). There isn’t much of young Joshua, but what there is “is power packed” and one would have to say that he’s a very talented young golfer where his main strength is his accuracy and there’s no doubt that he backs that up with a great attitude and well balanced game. Trent who has been playing some excellent golf of late went down 6/5 in what was a very entertaining match!

There’s no doubt The Invincibles Tour is coming of age and has fast developed a reputation for aspiring to do all the little things right. Other reasons for The Tour’s success is largely due to the caliber of players and families The Tour is attracting and just as importantly, because of the very generous support we receive from Hyatt Regency Coolum and their staff who allow us the use of their magnificent golf facilities to run not only this championship but also the Hyatt Regency Gold Cup of Cups.

It was absolutely fantastic to see two of our young boys “who had been knocked out in earlier rounds” in Sean Daines (Caloundra) and Lochlan Coleborn (Mt Coolum) “pictured above and below” come back to caddie for those that had made it through to the finals. I am so proud of these of these two boys as they epitomize the true spirit of The Invincibles Tour and that is “don’t ask what The Tour can do for you but more importantly, what you can do for The Tour” and that’s a refreshing change from some experiences we have had of late?

The Tour would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate everyone involved, particularly the competitors as we couldn’t have asked any more from them. They came to play and play they did, their pace of play was excellent, the best I’ve witnessed. Frank and I had a great day out and were enormously impressed with their presentation and the standard of play from all six contestants and if this is any example of the talent coming out of the Sunshine Coast then we’re really in for a very exciting and promising future.
